Shivaratri Celebrations in Various States of India

West Bengal
West Bengal – It is one of the huge states of India. People celebrate this festival “Maha Shivaratri” with loads of love and happiness. On this particular day, the devotees visit the famous temples within this place. If we talk about the traditions of this particular place then there is a tradition of making four Shivlings of clay with the help of Ganga. Later at pooja times these shivliings get used as four “prahars”. Prahars is basically the duration of time equal to 3 hours. In the first 3 hours, the first shivalings gets bathed with milk. In second 3 hours gets bathed with curd, in the third with ghee and in the fourth with honey. All the devotees do not sleep during the night in order to do this devotional pooja to celebrate the Maha Shivaratri Parv. This is the most important tradition of West Bengal related to Maha Shivaratri festival.

Himachal Pradesh

Well not a particular place but across the country huge Shivaratri pujas gets done during the festival of Shivaratri but if we have to choose the one then the temple Bhutnath of Himachal Pradesh organizes the hugest and most important Shivaratri Pooja all around the world. On this great occasion the Governor of the HP, arranges the Shobha Yatra which get inaugurated by the CM. If we talk about the time of celebrating this occasion for the first time then 500 years ago is the calculated time. To celebrate this festival with the ease, an eight-day-long fair is also gets organized which adds an entertaining factor within the celebration of Maha Shivaratri.

Andhra Pradesh

Well if we talk about the state Andhra Pradesh then each year this festival gets celebrated with loads of love and passion. There are lots of huge temples of Lord Shiva in this state and on this auspicious festival people visit temples such as Bharamarambha Malikarjunaswamy Temple at Srisailam and Kalahasteshwara Temple at Kalahasti. During the Maha Shivaratri time, people do not get a single place to get in because of a huge crowd but even after all these difficulties devotees manage to worship Lord Shiva with chanting all the mantras.

Assam

Now Lord Shiva is the great believers of the people of North-Eastern state of Assam. If we talk about tihs particular place then temples like Umananda Temple are situated in this state. Each year huge numbers of sages and devotees visit this temple in order to honour the Lord Shiva and to celebrate this great festival. Karnataka

As we all know that the great festival Shivaratri gets celebrated by all with lots of fun and joy. In this particular section, we are going to talk about the Shivaratri celebration in Karnataka. Karnataka is itself a huge state of India. What is most important thing which happens here during this festival is Sri Shidlingappa′s fair. This is one of the most important fairs all around the country. People gather at this temple and then the festival gets celebrated with Dollu and Majalu. As per the tradition, the married women wear traditional jewel – Linga which is made of silver or gold. There is also a tradition within southern Karnataka related to this festival that is children take them as the kings who can give the retribution to all. This tradition was set by the Hindu mythology.

Madhya Pradesh

Shivaratri is celebrated with religious fervor in the state of Madhya Pradesh. As a tradition, people in Madhya Pradesh take a holy dip in Sagar tank in Khajuraho. The place houses a beautiful Shiva temple.

Orissa

In this state, people celebrate the Shivaratri festival with loads of love. Well if we talk about the places within Orrissa in order to celebrate Shivaratri then these are Hakateswar Temple Atri and Lingaraj Temple. These two are the huge festivals but there are some other shiva temples too that are located in Kapilas, Bhubaneswar, Mahendragiri, Gupteswar,and Khiching. There is one more place where the Shiva Worship gets followed that is Puri.

Jammu and Kashmir

All the Hindus who live in Kashmir, follows the Shivaratri occasion with the enthusiasm and great zeal. At many places this festival lasts till 2 or 3 days but here in Jammu Kashmir, Shivratri gets celebrated for 21 days. The occasion starts on the 1st day of Phalgunaand gets ended on the 8th day of the bright half of Phalguna. In this particular area, the Kashmiri Brahmins do Shivaratri puja each year in order to celebrate the Lord Shiva′s wedding with Parvati. With this pooja, people worship Lord Shiva with the offerings of pure vegetarian food and serve on Lord Shiva’s statue with lots of devotion and love.
