West Bengal – It is one of the huge states of India. People celebrate this festival “Maha Shivaratri” with loads of love and happiness. If we talk about the traditions of this particular place then there is a tradition of making four Shivlings of clay with the help of Ganga. Later at pooja times these shivliings get used as four “prahars”. Prahars is basically the duration of time equal to 3 hours. In the first 3 hours, the first shivalings gets bathed with milk. In second 3 hours gets bathed with curd, in the third with ghee and in the fourth with honey. All the devotees do not sleep during the night in order to do this devotional pooja to celebrate the Maha Shivaratri Parv. This is the most important tradition of West Bengal related to Maha Shivaratri festival.
Well not a particular place but across the country huge Shivaratri pujas gets done during the festival of Shivaratri but if we have to choose the one then the temple Bhutnath of Himachal Pradesh organizes the hugest and most important Shivaratri Pooja all around the world. On this great occasion the Governor of the HP, arranges the Shobha Yatra which get inaugurated by the CM. If we talk about the time of celebrating this occasion for the first time then 500 years ago is the calculated time. To celebrate this festival with the ease, an eight-day-long fair is also gets organized which adds an entertaining factor within the celebration of Maha Shivaratri.

Jammu and Kashmir
All the Hindus who live in Kashmir, follows the Shivaratri occasion with the enthusiasm and great zeal. At many places this festival lasts till 2 or 3 days but here in Jammu Kashmir, Shivratri gets celebrated for 21 days. The occasion starts on the 1st day of Phalgunaand gets ended on the 8th day of the bright half of Phalguna. In this particular area, the Kashmiri Brahmins do Shivaratri puja each year in order to celebrate the Lord Shiva′s wedding with Parvati. With this pooja, people worship Lord Shiva with the offerings of pure vegetarian food and serve on Lord Shiva’s statue with lots of devotion and love.
